Meet the BAC Matters Specialist – Julie Gallagher

Hi there everybody! My name is Julie Gallagher. I am the new BAC Matters Specialist intern this year for the UMatter program at UWO. Are you thinking, “A BAC… whaaaat?!” Well, let me explain. The UMatter program is a campus-wide health communications campaign which strives to create a safer, more caring and compassionate UWO community. There are six different facets of the UMatter program, mine being BAC Matters. BAC stands for “Blood Alcohol Content,” so I bet you can guess what this facet of the program focuses on. Yep, that’s right, alcohol.

BAC Matters is all about encouraging students to make safe and responsible decisions regarding the use of alcohol while avoiding the negative consequences that can result from elevating your BAC above your green zone (a BAC of .055 and below). I work closely with the AODA Coordinator on campus, Residence Life staff, and the UMatter team to develop and implement AODA prevention and outreach programming in the Residence Halls as well as throughout the campus community.“Well… what does that all mean?” Thank you for asking! I collaborate a lot with CA’s providing them with AODA/BAC education and Mocktail Bars for their residents. There have already been four successful Mocktail events this year! Many more are in the works, including our upcoming Halloween event, Nightmare on Elmwood! Come to the Titan Underground in Reeve this Thursday, October 25th at 8 PM – 12 AM for games, FREE Mocktails, a costume contest, and prizes! To prepare to win, go to www.uwosh.edu/umatter/bac-matters to take the survey and gain information! Oh, and did I mention that the Fox Valley Disc Jockey Association (F.V.D.J.A) is going to be dj-ing this event?! It’s going to be off the chain! Believe me, you’re not going to want to miss it!
